Can cows be arrested?

One thing we have learned since moving to the country and getting animals is that if there is any way a cow (or substitute any animal) can get itself in a pickle, it will.  Tonight was no exception.  We went to a friends house to pick up a cow and her calf and get a load of wood.  The animals loaded into the trailer pretty well and then we went down the road a little ways to pick up the wood.  There is a center divider in the trailer, and we had carried a load just like this, successfully, a few weeks ago, so we figured it should go pretty well.  By the time we got to the place where the wood was, the cow had somehow stuck her leg through the divider and skinned it up pretty badly.  When we opened the door of the trailer, and got her leg freed, she decided she was done with the trailer - have you ever tried to stop a cow from backing out of a trailer?  Let's just say that the end you have to push on isn't the one where the food goes in...   We finally got her convinced to stay in there, loaded the wood and headed for home.

We decided we should stop at the farm supply store for some medicine to keep her wounds from becoming infected, and that's when the real trouble started.  While we were stopped in the parking lot, the calf somehow got around the gate and climbed over and into the wood pile.  By the time Todd came out of the store, he (the calf) was pretty much buried in the wood.  Back into the store to buy a halter and lead rope...  We got some of the wood moved around and got the calf so he wasn't buried and headed for home again.  We went a couple of blocks and pulled off into a school parking lot to check things out again and decided we had better unload the calf and wood - put the calf back in the trailer and take them home and come back to get the wood.  Sounds easy...  So, while I'm standing in the parking lot with a not so happy, lunging calf on a lead rope, who should drive by but a police man.  After a few minutes, he came driving back to check to see what was going on.  "I thought I saw a cow in the parking lot...?!?" "Is everything alright?!?"  He did eventually kind of see the humor in the situation and kindly held the flashlight as we unloaded wood and tried to keep the calf from bolting away.  And then patiently stayed with us as we tried to get the calf back into the trailer...  And let us leave the wood piled in the parking lot until we could get home and back again to pick it up.

You never know what kind of excitement awaits you when you get up in the morning...

  1. Oh, my, that's so hilarious I'm still laughing! I can just see you trying to be nonchalant and acting like "no big deal, officer, haven't you ever stood around in a parking lot with a calf on a rope?" Did you tell him it's just one more adventure to blog about to give us our chuckle of the day?
