A guest post by Todd (aka guest brag by Dad)
That was a wonderful supper and it deserves a few more details.
Since the girls were very young Tamara has consciously taken time to teach them how to cook. They have grown from being the gopher (go-for), to cooking at Mom's side to being completely competent in the kitchen. We are not health food fanatics, but we do like good food and we stay away from substitutes (think margarine) and processed foods. Tamara is an old fashioned cook and she has taught the girls to cook from scratch. We almost never have cakes from a mix, soup from a can, or salad dressing from a bottle. Tamara makes our own beef and chicken broths, bread from fresh ground flour, and homemade granola.
For tonight's supper Laura made the cream puffs from scratch and they were perfect. She also made the cream sauce for the chicken and peas. She started by making a roux of butter, flour, and onions, then added milk and seasoned it to perfection. The chicken was our own free range chicken (raised last summer by the girls with very little help from Tamara or me) left over from lunch today. Laura picked the chicken off the bones and Charlotte chopped it up really fine.
Abigail made the chocolate sauce from chocolate chips, butter, evaporated milk (this was the only thing in the whole meal that came from a can), and powdered sugar. Charlotte and Emily made the vanilla pudding from milk, corn starch, sugar, butter, and vanilla.
Tamara was around to answer questions if they came up, but she stayed out of the kitchen and the girls cooked the entire meal themselves.
One of the wonderful side effects of home schooling is the way the children all get along and work so cheerfully together. (They also stand over your shoulder and check your spelling and grammar when you are trying to write a blog post.)
After supper all of the girls gathered around the piano playing violins and singing. A great way to end the day.

Living in Ukr, if we want to eat, we cook/bake from scratch. It's also the way my mom mostly did stuff but I wasn't that interested when I was a kid. Now, I find it is much easier to simply do it from scratch. Also, having an MSG allergy, it's a very easy way to assure that there's no hive-inducing ingredient in the pot! I'm glad your kids are learning to prepare food that way! 3 Cheers!!
ReplyDeleteHe should get to brag on here more often! Enjoyed reading it, even if it did make me hungry!
